Travel: Viva Las Vegas! Bellagio Review

Last weekend I had the great joy and privilege to take a mini-vacation with my two favorite girls in the world, my mom and sis. We spent the weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada and did not waste a single second of our time there. It wasn’t our first time here together but it was our first time staying at The Bellagio.

We all are working women and needed to unwind with a little relaxation and A WHOLE LOT OF FUN. What better place to do that than The Bellagio in Fabulous Las Vegas? The weekend Girls Trip came at the perfect time as we all met up right after work to catch our Friday night flight then basked in everything The Bellagio had to offer for the entire weekend. There were so many great things about this hotel that it would be near impossible to list them all so I will simply list my top 9 things that I love about this hotel (in no particular order). Why 9 things?… because The Bellagio and Vegas in general had us on Cloud 9. Read on.

  1. The Location – The Bellagio is conveniently located on the Las Vegas strip and in the midst of EVERYTHING! It is right across from the Paris hotel, Planet Hollywood and right in between Cesar’s Palace and The Cosmopolitan. So much is in walking distance that you will rarely need to hail a cab/uber.
  2. The Planetarium – It is just the naturally beautiful and fragrantly amazing observatory filled with live and exotic florals accompanied by majestic figures. This part of the hotel changes season to season and can vary from everything to the coast line of Southern Italy to peaceful Japanese Gardens and even under water in the deepest parts of the ocean.
  3. The Spa – I can’t say enough about the spa. We received lux massages with rich coconut \ body butter elixirs from the finest in the industry. Following our massages we dipped in the spa’s individual hot tubs for relaxation and meditation.
  4. The Pool – Boss. Enough said.
  5. The Casino – Of course every Vegas hotel has a casino. But the Bellagio has been known to attract the wealthiest gamblers so it was fun to play a few slots, have a drink and watch others risk it all on the poker and black jack tables.
  6. The Clubs – “Club Hyde” and “The Bank”. At one point in the club I looked up and felt like it was snowing. Confetti in amounts never before seen. Lit DJs. All of this in one hotel!
  7. The Shows – The O show is the long running show gem that plays at the Bellagio It’s a must see. Circus De Soleil is not playing any games with this one. We had our fair share of shows while in Vegas. Another must see is Zoomanity.
  8. The Food– The Brunch buffet at The Bellagio is practically mandatory.  There are also several other cafés and eateries in the hotel. One of which include a chocolate, vanilla and caramel “water falls”.
  9. The Views – Right outside of our hotel were the beautiful Fountains at the Bellagio where the water danced as if it had a soul. Just beyond the fountains and across the strip, the view of America’s very own Eiffel Tower.

LAS VEGAS, NV – DECEMBER 24: The Bellagio Hotel & Casino water show comes to life after dark on December 24, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Thank you Bellagio for showing us an AMAZING time! Viva Las Vegas!!

Fitness: Sproing Into Fitness!

Let’s talk about fitness! This year has been a roller-coaster for me. Through it all I am reminded to keep my health and fitness at the top of my priorities list! One way I do this is by making sure that I have workouts that I can truly look forward to and where I am also maximizing my time. One workout that I really enjoy is this revolutionary one at Sproing Fitness in Houston – River Oaks!

President Devon & Crew – Sproing River Oaks

The workout feels like a group fitness class which is perfect for me! I also love seeing my heat rate and calories burned in real time up on a screen along with everyone else in the class. This makes for a little friendly competition which pushes me even harder. Not to mention the music is always great and the instructors really know how help you achieve your desired results!

Coach Lauren – Sproing River Oaks

The Sproing machine looks like a treadmill but is not… it’s SO much better!! There is a cushioned launch and landing pad that makes me feel like I’m working out on the beach! It is easy on my joints and helps me get a better workout! The motto at Sproing is “TRAIN HARD, LAND SOFT.”

Coach Jermaine – Sproing River Oaks

Check out this video from Wednesday when Sproing River Oaks was featured on Good Day Houston (KHOU).

Reflections: The Company You Keep

It is so important to surround yourself with positive people who uplift, encourage and inspire you to be the best version of yourself. With everything that I am striving to achieve in life, it becomes more and more apparent that energy drives progress. To be surrounded by ambitious people is important to me because I enjoy listening and sharing my goals and aspirations with people that I know and trust well.
I enjoy listening and sharing for a few reasons.

  1. Listening to others share their ambitions puts me in a position to be helpful. I enjoy helping people and contributing to a cause, project and/or goal when I see great potential in something or someone. This habit is not only genuinely enjoyable for me, but has also led to some amazingly productive conversations, outstanding collaborations, and long-lasting, mutually beneficial relationships.
  2. Sharing my goals with very select individuals that I know and trust well allows me to vocalize my goals. I always write my goals down (and this is advised for anyone) but when my tongue declares my goals aloud… it is powerful. There is POWER in the tongue. Especially when sharing with a like-minded, motivating individual because that energy can be reciprocated. You can tell if the relationship is healthy because you can express without fear of judgment, ridicule or unwarranted criticism from the receiver of your goals, dreams and ambitions.
  3. I’m a conversationalist by nature. lol

As powerful as the tongue is, the mind is that times a MILLION. “A man is but the product of his thoughts. What he thinks, he becomes.” – Gandhi

The ambitious understand, nothing is impossible… everything is reachable. I believe this so much and I am grateful to be a co-founder of an incredible professional networking organization that was founded upon these very principles!LeAunier allows it’s members the opportunity to network with other professionals and go-getters from all sorts of educational and professional backgrounds. This empowering membership based organization brings together a wide variety of people who may have never otherwise met.

Our membership consists of young African American doctors, nurses, lawyers, successful business owners, esteemed educators, city officials, financial analysts, HR professionals, etc, etc. We are a pretty mixed bag and that’s what makes us great! It’s about the collective!

We are establishing and fortifying long-lasting relationships, helping each other get to the next level and having FUN doing so! We believe in balance. Just as hard as we all work, we also like to play. LeAunier offers epic events such as yacht parties, group travel, holiday parties at beautiful venues, wonderful brunches and dinners where we fellowship and discuss our goals over great food, exclusive member only benefits, party bus events, community service events, opportunities for our members to become mentors to youth in the community, a private social platform where we encourage each other almost daily, and so much more!

I recommend that everyone become a part of a network/group that offers professional networking, positive energy, empowering tools, wonderful friendships and of course an opportunity to unwind and have a great time.

Feature: Who’s Who Honors Carissa Stephens!

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook then you may already know that recently I was chosen and recognized among other exceptional individuals to be highlighted in the Who’s Who Black Houston 2016 Book. This book is set to be distributed across the entire city of Houston and beyond in libraries and public schools to serve as an educational and inspirational tool for many. I am completely humbled and honored to be in this book!

I was invited to attend an unveiling ceremony with keynote speaker Houston Mayor, Sylvester Turner. The event churned out many influential people and game changers residing in the 4th largest city in the nation (soon to be 3rd.)

picture1

I really enjoyed the food that was served, the speech from Mayor Turner and learning about the fact that this 2016, ninth addition is the FIRST time (and possibly last in my lifetime) that the Who’s Who organization has been able to recognize an African American President AND Mayor of my city. What a privilege to be recognized in the same book along with them. I mean… little ol me? My family was there to support me. All the feels…

picture2

Here is the snippet from the my bio that was in the book:

Carissa Stephens is a Houston native who has been able to attract, inspire and influence a global audience ever since she began her YouTube channel (NaturallyGG) in 2011. She is now taking the blogosphere by storm with her recent launch of www.shescharissmatic.com, a life blog dedicated to inspiring others. On her website Carissa writes about beauty, style, travel, love, and tips for living a happier and healthier life. From her site she also operates an e-commerce store. In addition to her blog and channel, her passions include public speaking, spokes-modeling, coordinating and hosting events. She’s worked with many beauty brands such as Cantu, L’Oreal Paris, and Dark and Lovely to name a few. Catch her this summer as she hosts at ESSENCE Festival for their Style and Beauty Expo in New Orleans!

As a mentor, Carissa is big on education! She is a graduate of Sam Houston State University and The University of Houston were she obtained her Bachelor of Business in Management Degree and a certification in Accountancy and Taxation, respectively. She enjoys business and has recently held the title of Tax Operations Analyst for a Fortune 100 Energy company. She believes everyone should follow their dreams.”

Again, just blown away by the notion that someone recognized greatness in me and decided to share it. If you’d like to be considered for a nomination to be in next years edition, leave a comment below telling me a little bit about your story and get in touch with me! Make sure you get your copy of the Who’s Who 2016 Book and share with those you know. Let’s never forget to remember the importance of recognizing black excellence in our communities! Amongst her various roles, Carissa is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of She’s Charissmatic LLC  and Co-Founder of Naturally GG. This fierce and ambitious business woman is also PR and Business Development Professional, loving wife to Kenneth Stephens (Managing Attorney at Stephens PLLC) and mommy to a Maltese puppy named Jojo. Carissa graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Business Management and Marketing from Sam Houston State University in 2009 and went on to earn a Certificate of Accountancy, Accounting and Taxation from University of Houston, C.T. Please tell us about www.shescharissmatic.com and what inspired you to start such an awesome website.

She’s ChaRISSmatic is a lifestyle blog that serves as a source of inspiration for many things including fitness, food, beauty, love and travel! What inspired me to start the website was my love for writing and storytelling. On my blog, I share things that I experience personally. I enjoy living life every day to the fullest and I hope that my blog can inspire others to do the same. To take risks, to get out of their comfort zones, and to really experience more of beauty of life! The key is in the simple things…

I also believe that my purpose is to empower people with the tools they need to be successful. I hope to continually offer my words of wisdom from things that I learn along my own journey, to equip and empower my subscribers to follow their dreams and live a happier, healthier, purpose-driven life.

Your youtube page, https://www.youtube.com/c/naturallygg, has over 83,000 subscribers!!! Please tell us what Naturally GG is all about.

NaturallyGG is a YouTube channel that I founded along with my sister in 2011 and was originally intended to simply document our personal natural hair journeys. Prior to 2011, I chemically straightened my hair because since I could remember, it was what I was “supposed to do” as an African American female. I became more enlightened and around this time also had several epiphanies. The main epiphanies that I experienced were:

  1. I don’t know what my hair texture looks like in its natural, God given state and that became a real problem for me…
  2. The standard of beauty that I was living by was no longer acceptable for my life
  3. My natural hair could be so much more VERSATILE and HEALTHIER than my chemical relaxed hair and I wanted to embrace it in all of its kinks, curls and complexities!

So I embraced the journey and have been loving it ever since! There is nothing my hair can’t do in its natural state. For the past 5 years, the channel has shared countless natural hair tutorials, product reviews and lifestyle vlogs. I had no idea back then that the channel would grow to receive MILLIONS of views and open the doors to some AMAZING opportunities!!  Through this brand I have able to work with so many companies, fulfilling my dreams of being an impactful beauty influencer. I am able to travel with my brand, do some spoke-modeling and public speaking while engaging with live audiences and continuing to create engaging, informative and entertaining content for my audience!

picture3

Aside from being a successful entrepreneur you also work full time. What is your secret for managing it all?

Honestly…. Multi-vitamins and Jesus are my saving grace! Also, I maintain a pretty detailed calendar and to-do lists!! Writing things down help me and organization is key! Also, making sure my time is spent doing things I actually want to do is critical. I am intentional about designing the life I want to live.

picture2

Passion:

Personal growth and development is the passion that sums up mostly everything. Getting more fit, sharpening my skill set, being a better mentor, continuing to grow into the woman God is designing me to be, it’s all something I’m passionate about. I seek to maximize my potential while motivating, cultivating and inspiring others to be the very best version of themselves.

Additionally (because this needs it’s own paragraph), dance is my first love. lol I have danced my entire life. I was in studio dance as a child where I learned ballet, tap and jazz dance; drill team in high school were I learned competitive precision drill/dance and eventually served as the Captain of the team; and in college I danced and directed an ensemble where I primarily did praise, street and open dance. I love to choreograph and see my interpretation of music come to life! I currently enjoy a weekly Zumba class where I do lots of Latin inspired dancing and lots of “twerk”. Judge me. lol

Style: (stores/colors/must-haves)

Whatever I am feeling on any given day is the style that I’m rocking. If you follow me on Instagram @carissastephens, then you know that I keep my style switched up very often. Fashion comes and goes… so I try to dress to how I feel regardless of trends. I don’t have a favorite clothing store because I can spot a jewel almost anywhere! lol The hunt is honestly fun for me.

Work:

Most days I wear an all-purpose dress to work. It can be a wrap dress or have more structure… easy, comfortable and effective. And a blazer. I LOVE a blazer. lol

Non-work:

When I’m not at work I like to dress like a hippie. lol Always comfortable, maybe a crop top and denim shorts most of the time to help tolerate this hot Houston weather. I tend to love hi-waist things and sundresses.

Beauty: (products/tricks)

I love skin care because in my opinion it is the basis for physical beauty. My products are not super fancy by any means. However, when it comes to staples I must have my Neutrogena make-up removing wipes and Clarosonic spin brush.

Make up:

A foundation I have grown to love is Clinique’s liquid make-up in ‘Fresh Golden’. I usually set that with a light dust of MAC pressed powder. I love a “cat eye” using liquid liner and a nice eyebrow which is now made easier with the help of Anastasia brow definer. Throw on a little blush and lip gloss and I’m out!

Food: (restaurants/preparations/must-eats)

I love Creole food, seafood, soul food, pub food, Vietnamese, Mexican, Italian … lol I’m a foodie with a diverse pallet and I love it all!

Fitness:

Dance is my cardio as also mentioned above. I also enjoy squatting and doing light weight training. For me, staying fit is a matter of having a fun and active lifestyle. I’m not a fan of workout machines or dieting but I absolutely love jogging in the park and will take the stairs vs. the elevator as much as I can. Someone hold me to that…

Career:

I am a Business Professional and Entrepreneur

Challenges:

My challenges are making time to do it all… time management.

Awards:

  • Who’s Who Houston
  • Women of Houston
  • Nzuri 100 Carat Diamond Award

Outfit Details:

  • Look 1: This is a look I would wear to work with a closed button up blazer. After work, the blazer comes off and I’m ready for happy hour with my friends.
  • Look 2:  Simple and classic, black and white striped skater dress that makes me feel flirty but is also still classy. I love this look!
  • Look 3: This edgy look is a rarity for me but represents me stepping out of my comfort zone and being bold and daring without fear of being judged by others.

Events: Hosting #ESSENCEFest2016!! (EPIC)

At the beginning of this month I had the most fulfilling opportunity of my career as a blogger/ vlogger to date. I’d like to share it with you…

13590520_10102444392030915_4698727804929086113_n

Being a Contributor for Essence Festival 2016:

Since the beginning of the year my mom, sister and I, had been planning to make a girls trip out of Essence Festival 2016. The event usually takes place in New Orleans on July 4th weekend. It was the first year that we planned far in advance enough to make this mini “girls getaway” happen and also the first year that all of our schedules could accommodate for the trip. We were so excited about planning this trip and in our wildest dreams couldn’t have imagined that we would also be specially invited by ESSENCE to host and present at the FIRST EVER Beauty and Style Expo taking place that weekend.

#NaturallyGG was hand selected by the team over at Essence to be a contributor for this legendary and historical event! We were completely honored and elated to connect with this remarkable team of individuals during the planning phase and throughout the entire weekend! Before we knew it, we’d touched down in New Orleans!!! We arrived on Friday and hit the ground running!! The #EssenceExperience was nothing short of AMAZING! We were greeted by a sharply dressed older black man and a stretch limousine equipped with a wet bar featuring vodka, bourbon and other beverages. The weekend was looking very promising already…

13532821_10102443857272575_3281012372224929271_n

Once we checked into the hotel (Harrah’s Hotel and Casino), our first stop was a #DesignEssentials event. There we met Chrisette Michelle, Christian Keyes, and Hill Harper. I love them all. A couple of drinks and a delicious creole meal later, it was already time to change for the 3rd time that day and head to the first night of concerts!

13529207_10102444131033955_6692883634099099364_npicture7

The concert line up for Essence Fest 2016 was pretty cool and we thoroughly enjoyed all of the performances that we caught! We mostly watched from backstage in the VIP Super Lounge and also some from our floor seat tickets! The VIP Lounge was were we met most of the celebrities that we encountered. There were several open bars, buffet lines of food, plush furniture…the works! We fit right in and felt right at home. The line up of concerts included the following:

Friday, July 1

  • On the Mainstage: Maxwell, New Edition, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Tyrese, Faith Evans and Estelle.
  • In the Superlounges: Digable Planets, Daley, Eric Bellinger, Lion Babe, The Internet, Tweet, Estelle, Mali Music, V. Bozeman, Kelly Price, Zakes Bantwini and Sky Wanda.

Saturday, July 2

  • On the Mainstage: Mariah Carey, Charlie Wilson, Common and Jeremih.
  • In the Superlounges: Doug E. Fresh, Tink, Jidenna, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, St. Beauty, Lalah Hathaway, Judith Hill, Wizkid and Lady Leshurr.

  • In the Superlounges: MC Lyte, Dej Loaf, Cyril Neville, Leon Bridges, Kehlani, New Breed Brass Band, Robert Glasper, BJ The Chicago Kid, The Brand New Heavies and Little Simz.

After a jam packed first day, Saturday we slept in a bit then enjoyed a FABULOUS brunch hosted by #SallyBeauty and #Blavity.  The cuisine was so delicious and the vibes were so perfect that it made me emotional! lol There we connected with our amazing Blavity Babes and also celebrity stylist Kim Kimble.

While enjoying shrimp and grits, bacon, bread pudding and more, she shared with us how much she enjoys styling Beyonce’s hair and her favorite braiding techniques. Particularly, she discussed her inspiration behind Beyonce’s braids and other styles in the recent #Lemonade video album.

After brunch, we stopped by the expos at the New Orleans Convention Center to meet face to face with everyone we’d been commuting with on the Essence side. While backstage we also met Misty Copeland! She is so poised and walks like a dancer even in heels.

picture1013501899_10102445869714625_8728189518538785815_n

Tyra Banks also presented on the Beauty and Style stage that day…the same stage that we would be presenting on the very next day! Oprah Winfrey made her debut appearance at Essence Festival in the same year that we made ours! She delivered a very empowering and inspirational speech!

picture12

“Before you think about the thing, you have to have an intention about the thing. The intention in which you give determines the outcome. My intention to live to the highest calling and be pressed to the mark of the highest calling.” -Oprah Winfrey

Sunday we woke up early to be picked up by our driver and be delivered to Talent Holding at the New Orleans Convention Center. We did early mic checks and with the help of the production managers, set the stage just perfect for our presentation. After hair touch ups, make up prep and a light breakfast backstage… it was SHOWTIME!!!

Essence Fest 2016 Beauty School LIVE by NaturallyGG

We came out to our theme song “Black Queens” – Official music video on our YouTube channel. We introduced ourselves, talked a little about what we do and demonstrated our favorite quick and easy updo styles one at a time using slightly different techniques! For us, we are working women…we both have careers, full time jobs and our brands that we pour into. Not to mention our other activities, organizations and obligations that keep us busy. We felt it was important to demo how simple and effective styling your natural hair can be for women on the go like ourselves! The stage felt like our home. We had a BLAST up there!!! After being on the Beauty and Style main stage for about 20 minutes we went straight over to our ‘Fan Meet & Greet’ at the Essence Beauty Box booth. We met so many of our wonderful followers! Following the Meet & Greet we went to press and interviews for a couple of hours. What a rush!!!

picture14picture15 13686531_10102463663435865_3943692209764652973_nBefore we knew it the weekend was over, but we didn’t leave New Orleans without spending the majority of the 4th of July walking around in the French Quarter and enjoying the sights, sounds and flavors of New Orleans!!!

Style: Designer A Leap of Style

FEATURE DESIGNER | Karissa Lindsay

Recently, I had the pleasure of spending a beautiful Saturday morning with one of my favorite designers, Karissa Lindsay! Karissa is the Founder, CEO and Creative Mind behind the beautiful African inspired women’s apparel line, A Leap of Style.
 Karissa Lindsay
This beautiful soul and I share many things in common. Not only do our names sound the same (spelled differently, mine with a C and hers with a K) but we also are women in business who share a passion for inspiring other women! Karissa is certainly good at what she does. I am inspired by her tenacity and ability to impact the lives of women through FASHION! When I am wearing her designs, I feel flawless, fierce and FINE honey! Yas! There is just something about cultured glam…
Take A Leap of Style With Me
A real leap of style
she's charissmatic in a leap of style
In an interview with Karissa I picked her brain on everything associated with her fashion label. Read more to see what Karissa had to say!
A leap of style
 Karissa A Leap of Style
Q1: When did you first fall in love with fashion?

Karissa: I fell in love with fashion in middle school. My mom was a little bit of a shopaholic, and she was also a pretty good seamstress along with many of the women in my family, so those qualities rubbed off on me. I decided I would be a designer at a fairly young age, but I got dissuaded along the way, so I took a few different paths.

Q2. Who or what inspires your designs?

I’m really inspired by the absolutely fly women who purchase clothing from A Leap of Style! The absolute most important core value of the company is to inspire and empower women through fashion – including our customers, employees, and the women who may not shop with us, but who are still drawn to and inspired by the story of the brand. With that in mind, I’m constantly thinking about my most loyal clients, and the places they’ll go in their A Leap of Style pieces and the details they’ll appreciate. That inspires me above almost everything else.

3. How do/ did you overcome the challenges associated with starting your own brand fashion label?

As an entrepreneur there are always going to be some challenges, and I think the best way for anyone to overcome them starts within as with most things. If I have a fabric sourcing issue, or a hard time fulfilling an order, or a cash flow issue, I have to first remind myself why I run this business. It may sound crazy, but I don’t do it for money, or on some levels even the clothing. Again, it goes back to inspiring and empowering women through fashion – if I can say, “Yes, that’s happening everyday,” and there is evidence all around me that it is, then I can push through whatever challenge presents itself.

4. What’s in your future plans for A Leap of Style?

I’m always looking to expand the reach of the brand, whether that’s through collaborations with bloggers *smile* or through hosting events. Eventually, we’ll offer a different range of products for the total woman, but for now I’m happy to produce beautiful, quality clothing that will help a woman hold her head high with a smile on her face.
Make sure you check out A Leap of Style Fashion Blog and Store which includes a feature with Yours Truly and Take A Leap of Style With Me! You’ll be glad you did.
